Waymo Roulette on Lyft in Nashville Field Report
Key Waymo Roulette on Lyft in Nashville Field Report Findings
For more than 25 minutes, we ordered and canceled more than a dozen rides. Not one was a Waymo. Lyft offers no way to select a Waymo directly, so every request is a spin of the roulette wheel. At one point Lyft paired us with a human driver 68 minutes away.
Consistency is the constraint. A rider who wants a Waymo cannot count on getting one through Lyft, and the only way to guarantee a ride in Waymo is to download the Waymo app and order it there.
Waymo Roulette on Lyft in Nashville Field Report
In Nashville, Grayson Brulte played autonomy roulette on Lyft, spending more than 25 minutes trying to get paired with a Waymo. This field report covers the setup on Broadway, the spins, the 68 minute driver, the cancellation limit that never came and what the experience signals about Waymo’s move to a dedicated app.
The Location
We played autonomy roulette on Broadway in downtown Nashville, across from Nissan Stadium and next to the Hard Rock. The rules of autonomy roulette are simple. Request a ride, see what we get paired with, cancel if it is not a Waymo, and spin again.
The Spins
Spin one, no Waymo. Spin two, no Waymo. On spin three, Lyft’s cancellation flow asked us why we were canceling. Our answer is other. At 12 minutes, still no pairing. At 19 minutes, still no pairing and after 25 minutes we finally gave up trying to get paired with. Waymo on Lyft.
The Ban That Never Came
Special Field Correspondent David Moss found that roughly 10 cancellations in a row gets a rider blocked from Lyft. We canceled more than a dozen times and were never blocked, so perhaps that limit may have been lifted.
Outlook
Waymo has a partnership with Lyft in Nashville, but our experience on Broadway shows why the dedicated Waymo app will win at the end of the day. As long as Lyft gives no way to select a Waymo, getting one stays a game of chance.
This will play out market after market around the world. We expect Waymo, and over time other robotaxi companies, to move riders to their own dedicated apps once they establish their brand in a market.
