Waymo Austin Staging Lot Field Report
Key Waymo Austin Staging Lot Field Report Findings
Waymo uses it’s uncovered staging lot located just across Lady Bird Lake from downtown Austin to deploy vehicles quickly into service.
The staging lot sits roughly 6.1 miles from Waymo’s main depot near Austin International Airport (which itself is about 4.5 miles from the airport). The site features temporary power with no permanent charging infrastructure, merely a fenced-off lot to charge vehicles using plugin cables. Vehicles enter and exit fully autonomously with no human interaction, except for a human plugging in the charging cables.
A 3rd party operates the lot on behalf of with roughly 30 vehicles observed on site and capacity for 40 to 50 vehicles using overflow parking. Fully charged vehicles move autonomously to a resting/storage area to await service. However, key operational challenges remain, as vehicles were not observed being cleaned despite cleaning supplies being present, leaving visible dirt on the sides of cars waiting to go into service.
Waymo Austin Staging Lot Field Report
While conducting field work in Austin, we uncovered a Waymo staging lot just across Lady Bird Lake from downtown Austin. This report covers the location, infrastructure, charging setups, and fleet readiness of Waymo’s localized hub operations.
Location and Proximity to Main Depot
The staging lot is Waymo’s first uncovered staging area in Austin. It sits in a prime location near the Austin skyline and downtown, approximately 6.1 miles from Waymo’s main depot near Austin International Airport (which is located about 4.5 miles from the airport itself). This proximity allows vehicles to route between the main depot and staging lot as needed.
Infrastructure and Charging Setup
The staging area operates using temporary power rather than permanent charging infrastructure. It consists of a fenced-off lot where vehicles are charged via manual plug-in cables. Vehicles enter and leave the facility fully autonomously without human interaction, with human intervention limited solely to connecting the charging cables.
Capacity and Vehicle Staging
The lot currently holds roughly 30 Waymo vehicles and can accommodate 40 to 50 vehicles at any time using overflow parking areas. Once vehicles are fully charged, they drive autonomously to a designated resting/storage area within the lot to wait until they are called out into active passenger service.
Cleaning and Fleet Maintenance Challenges
A noticeable operational gap across both the main depot and the staging lot was vehicle cleanliness. Although cleaning supplies and a designated cleaning area were present on site, vehicles were not observed being cleaned. As a result, several vehicles idling in the storage area awaiting passenger service had visible dirt along their sides.
Outlook
Autonomous staging depots represent a crucial component of scaling autonomous ride-hailing networks by positioning fleets close to high-demand downtown areas. As Waymo’s operations mature, transitioning from manual plug-in charging to robotic or wireless charging and establishing routine vehicle cleaning workflows will be key to optimizing depot operations.
